Do you think that if people want to make a product then they should give themselves up or find volunteers to test this product on? Do you think that animals should be forced to give their lives up for the sake of a new medicine or cosmetic product?
Using the information from an article I discovered published by the Inquisitr, First animal-free screening platform developed for testing kidney toxicity of new drugs, cosmetics. The article overall states that there is a new way to test the kidney toxicity in new drugs making it much more easier on the scientists to test on something other than a living thing, and this solution would keep many animals safe from chemicals and illnesses.
Hearing about the fact that my favorite brand of makeup, Estée Lauder, had resumed paying to have their products test on animals was devastating to find out. Animals and Commercial testing should not be used in the same sentence. Typically when those two words are uttered in the same line, the only reason it has been said is to recognize animal cruelty. In some cases it could be because of the fact that more and more animals are becoming free from abuse and neglect from commercial and scientific testings. In other cases, it’s because another little critter has been tested on and has brought attention to the fact that many companies you wouldn’t really think is a threat to animals actually is. Commercial and scientific testing on animals is a threat to society. Continuing to support brands and companies that abuse animals is no worse than doing it yourself. The only difference is not having the blood and first-hand guilt on your hands. Finally having some recognition about this topic has been much needed in our society, because it is not just make-up that has been tested on animals, but also medicines and many new daily products used and assumed to be okay.
Having had a breakthrough in the cosmetic and medicine industry, a way to figure out how many of our day to day products negatively affect us and our kidneys was really needed. Researchers in Singapore have created a “new animal-free screening platform that predicts a drug’s toxicity on the kidneys”. This is a very important because it will make the task of testing drugs of medicines much safer and easier for scientist to perform. This drug screening platform does not just apply to medicines though. It also applies to products in the food and cosmetic industry. This is beneficial because it helps reduce the risk measures when using animals because the difference between the rat and human species is significantly different in certain ways, which is why some products test on these little critters doesn’t properly work on us humans.
In my next blog post I will talk about why people become vegetarian and vegan.
