Using http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/11/giancarlo-stanton-contract-mlb-money-nba-nfl, I will answer the question whether beasball players should get paid as much as they do.
Thesis: After looking through this website, I learned that one of the main reasons for baseball players getting paid as much as they do is because there is no salary cap. Major league baseball has a luxury tax for teams that have large payrolls, so this allows some players to make the ridiculous amount of money like Giancarlo Stanton signed a contract recently for 325 million for 13 years. Also the MLB has a very strong union. Marvin Miller was the head of the union and was the one that paved the road for players to make as much as they do, he raised the minimum salary from 19,000 to 326,000 in a short period of time. Finally, the baseball season is 162 days, these players are constantly playing for their team throughout most of the year.
Analysis: After reading the article I selected, I learned that there are many factors in why baseball players make as much money as they do, and honestly after reading this short article, i think they deserve the money they are making for the most part. The baseball season is a very long one, in fact, it has the longest regular season in sports with 162 games played. Also another key factor in why these players have the ability to make all of this money is because baseball doesn't have a salary cap. A salary cap is the limit a team has on how much money they can give to their players, so with that said, baseball doesn't have a salary cap allowing teams to give whatever kind of money they want to their players. Teams receive their money off of their success, which is why some teams have a lot more money than other teams like the Yankees compared to the Athletics. As Billy Beane the General Manager for the Oakland Athletics once said, “Baseball is an unfair game”. I agree with Beane statement, but I also enjoy teams allowing to be able to spend what they want because it makes winning that more important so teams can secure their future.
Future Research: In my next blog post, I want to dig a little deeper into this salary cap deal and see if their are other ways for the not as wealthy teams to make more money in order to be able to afford bigger names and have a better chance in free agency.
